Carbon Recycling Technology (CRT) — A New Approach to Integrated Energy Infrastructure
Topsoe’s recent announcement of its involvement in HDF Energy’s 250 MW BaseBlue project in Texas highlights a growing market for reliable, lower-carbon power dedicated to AI data centres.
The project proposes producing about 400 tonnes of blue hydrogen daily from natural gas, with over 95% CO₂ capture during production.
But one question remains: Why capture carbon when we can also recycle it?
At Clean Energy and Water Technologies Pty Ltd (CEWT), we are developing Carbon Recycling Technology (CRT), an integrated approach that combines:
- Hydrogen-rich syngas production from natural gas.
- CO₂ recovery and conversion into recycled synthetic natural gas (RSNG) through methanation with renewable hydrogen.
- Reliable, dedicated power generation for AI data centres.
- Recovery of useful thermal energy for cooling and heating.
Our proposed 20 MW CRT trigeneration project in Victoria, Australia, aims to demonstrate this integrated approach at commercial scale.
Unlike conventional carbon capture and sequestration, CRT seeks to retain recovered carbon as a useful energy carrier through repeated conversion and reuse.
The engineering challenge is to demonstrate the carbon balance, hydrogen requirements, energy efficiency and lifecycle economics across the complete process.
The future of sustainable data-centre infrastructure should be measured not simply by megawatts generated, but by useful electricity, cooling and heat delivered per unit of primary energy and lifecycle carbon emitted.
CEWT is working to translate this integrated concept into commercial reality.
CRT is not a blue-hydrogen technology. It integrates hydrogen-rich syngas, renewable hydrogen and recovered carbon to produce recycled synthetic natural gas, enabling reliable power generation with useful heat recovery.
Carbon is a resource. Hydrogen is an enabler. Integration is the opportunity.
